Conrad van Tiggelen is a Dutch visual artist who grew up on the Dutch-Belgian coast. The influence of the North Sea, the Flemish landscape and the wide Dutch skies can still be felt throughout his work.
After college, he lived abroad for more than twenty years in cities including Brussels, Paris, Nice, Chicago and New York, where he became familiar with a wide range of artistic movements and cultural influences. The work of artists such as Antoni Tàpies, Louise Nevelson, Anselm Kiefer and Pierre Soulages continues to inspire his practice.
Working with discarded packaging materials, plastics and raw substances such as sand and concrete, Van Tiggelen creates layered abstract landscapes that evoke maps, coastlines, aerial views and oceanic forms. His work explores the traces of tourism, consumption and human activity within both urban and natural environments.
Living and working close to the sea remains an important source of inspiration. Recent travels through Zanzibar, the Maldives, Thailand, the Philippines and Palau have deepened his interest in the fragile relationship between paradise tourism, ecology and environmental vulnerability.
Van Tiggelen questions whether art itself can be sustainable. He searches for beauty in waste materials and aims to create works with as little residual waste as possible.
After many years abroad, he returned to the Netherlands in 2011. He currently lives and works in Rotterdam and Cadzand-Bad
Conrad van Tiggelen is een Nederlands beeldend kunstenaar die opgroeide aan de Zeeuws-Vlaamse kust. De invloed van het Vlaamse landschap en de weidse Hollandse luchten is nog altijd zichtbaar in zijn werk.
Na zijn studie woonde hij meer dan twintig jaar in het buitenland, onder andere in Brussel, Parijs, Nice, Chicago en New York. Daar kwam hij in aanraking met uiteenlopende kunststromingen en culturele invloeden. Het werk van kunstenaars als Antoni Tàpies, Louise Nevelson, Anselm Kiefer en Pierre Soulages vormt nog steeds een belangrijke inspiratiebron binnen zijn praktijk.
Met afgedankte verpakkingsmaterialen, plastics en ruwe materialen zoals zand en beton creëert Van Tiggelen gelaagde abstracte landschappen die doen denken aan kaarten, kustlijnen, luchtfoto’s en oceanische structuren. Zijn werk onderzoekt de sporen die toerisme, consumptie en menselijke activiteit achterlaten in zowel stedelijke als natuurlijke omgevingen.
Leven en werken aan zee blijft een belangrijke inspiratiebron. Recente reizen naar Zanzibar, de Malediven, Thailand, de Filipijnen en Palau hebben zijn belangstelling verdiept voor de kwetsbare relatie tussen paradijselijk toerisme, ecologie en milieukwetsbaarheid.
Van Tiggelen stelt de vraag of kunst zelf duurzaam kan zijn. Hij zoekt naar schoonheid in afvalmaterialen en probeert werken te creëren met zo min mogelijk restafval.
Na vele jaren in het buitenland keerde hij in 2011 terug naar Nederland. Hij woont en werkt in Rotterdam en Cadzand-Bad
